Yet another Detour de CT

While we thought maybe it was the tenth annual Detour de CT, it may in fact only be the 9th. According to the historic documents, the first one was fall of 2010 (when no one died). That first was one was invitational and all since then have been public affairs.

Nevertheless, Saturday was another running of the Detour. I don't think I had ridden a hundred miles in a clip since the Detour in 2017, so I was a little nervous about survival. I had ridden down to Milford the other day and averaged 18 something MPH, which is pretty quick for a slow piece of shit like me.

Since Salem has stopped really publicizing his ride except on his blog and no one reads blogs, the number of riders has shrunk to 7. There's no a and b group anymore, and the canvas bag contingent doesn't come.

Anyway, we did not ride the whole thing, since Mohegan State Forest is now impassable. First year the entire ride was left unfinished. We did, however, ride almost the whole thing and even stop for lunch. Everyone is getting soft.

The day before, I crashed and totally abraded my hand. Riding on the hoods hurt, but it was other ok.

I've been getting a lot of use from my Mountainsmith backpack lately. The other evening, it made easy work of picking up a 700c wheel from Erik's man-cave of bike goodness (thanks again, Erik!) The weight wasn't really noticeable, but every time a streetlight cast my shadow ahead of me I could see that I was basically wearing a strapped-on continental kit.

Bikes outside: excess

UPDATE! So, I came home and Johanna told me that this post was kind of mean. She's right, so I apologize to the owner of the gold Bianchi. Since my New Year's resolution to stop being a jerk, I hope he accepts my apology. Although, I won't rescind my comments on the upside down handlebars. Upside down handlebars aren't right!

I hope Chris doesn't get mad that I'm stealing his project, but I saw a bike outside today that I wanted to comment on briefly.

I had lunch today with Marisa at Ichiban. This Bianchi was chained out front. It had weird aero bars and upside down handlebars, something I never understand, and it had upside down brake levers. It also looked like it was prepared to ride across the continent. Inside, the owner looked like his was simply riding to lunch. Doesn't that strike you as slightly excessive? Does he bring eight changes of clothes to walk around the block? What does his car look like? How many bomb shelters does his house have?

Sorry.

Uncommon Gear

I spent a happy portion of my late teens and early twenties meandering around the northeast quadrant of the US. My scaled-down version of the full-fledged American RV experience replaced the Class A Winnebago with a 1972 VW Campmobile and the tow-behind dinghy with a bike or two.

I recently found this Shimano Biopace-equipped hubcap, which lived on the right (drive side) front wheel of my rig. The 42-tooth chainwheel was on the right rear wheel to aid with hill-climbing. Read more!

drop it like its hot

DSC09569
Last week, locked up at the rack at Home Depot; I spotted this bicycle; which, apparently, can work it, twirp it and make money money. This bike has more moves than that last sentence has commas. 21 speeds of delight! Yeah baby yeah, your bicycle’s ass is making me randy. I was at home depot picking up parts for a prototype rack I am building to tow my kayak.

We have all ghostridden a bicycle before. Maybe to a friend’s house or back to our own spot. Its not an uncommon sight. However, seeing someone ghostride a bicycle while on a scooter is something I haven’t seen before. This dude banked a sweet left at the intersection like it was nuttin’ and just motored on his way. But where? And why? Perhaps he is enroute to have his paltry rear suspension upgraded to a Fully Active Rear.

Ironically, this is a common sight! This guy and his wagon/dog trike caravan pass by Guy Harvey’s Island Grill pretty much every shift I work. He makes decent time with a solid pedal cadence in the afternoon. But whenever he passes by at night, he pedals one slow stroke, rests for a second, and down goes the pedal on the other side.
